Technology leader Versaperm, has introduced a new Gravimetric measurement system to determine the permeability of textiles to ISO 15496. The equipment is ideal for both quality control and development.
Modern breathable materials are widely used to waterproof and windproof a wide range of outdoor fabrics and garments. These materials should allow the free passage of water as a vapour, but strongly resist water droplets and wind. Measuring the permeability and effectiveness of such fabrics has historically been fraught with difficulties, with different equipment producing wildly different results – often by as much as 4-500%.
The Versaperm ISO 15496:2004 gravimetric measurement equipment easily overcomes these difficulties. It is designed around a high quality solid acrylic water bath to reduce critical thermal losses and offers precise temperature control. A cooling coil is also included for additional temperature stabilization.
Weatherproof fabrics are produced in massive quantities worldwide. They are typically plain weaves with yarns coated with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish, many with a micro-porous or monolithic film, coating, or bi-component combination. These materials are ideally suited to the new system.
Versaperm also produces a WVTR meter which can produce results much faster, sometimes as quickly as 30 minutes.
For companies where the throughput is not high enough to warrant dedicated equipment, Versaperm also provides a laboratory testing service.
