Confectionary & Snack packaging
Shelf life Vs Design

Packaging materials with the right vapour permeability can substantially improve the shelf life and quality of a snack or confectionary product. But permeability is also a major factor in print quality. Sadly the two don’t always go hand in hand and packaging innovation and branding is sometimes sacrificed. Materials, packaging construction and innovation all demand quality control and development – and this is where the new permeability measurement systems from Versaperm come to the fore.
Versaperm’s permeability metre range can measure the vapour permeability of a huge range of materials and finished packs – from metalized foil packages and sachets through to sugar coatings and barrier materials. They can also provide measurements of the equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) of products that might decompose using other measuring techniques.
Results are fast and are typically accurate in the parts per million range, (parts per billion for some materials and vapours), Not only that but they do it faster and more economically than ever before. With some materials these results can sometimes be achieved in as little as 30 minutes, but even with hard to measure foils, results can normally be turned around in a day.
The system is considerably faster and more accurate than using conventional gravimetric technique measurements that can take days or even weeks to perform. It can also, optionally, measure not just water vapour permeability, but the permeability for virtually all gases including Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen and Oxygen.
A laboratory testing service is also available.
