The Hidden Factor in Adhesives and Adhesive film Performance

In today’s advanced manufacturing environment, vapour permeability plays a crucial but often under-recognised role in determining product performance, longevity and regulatory compliance. From adhesive films and packaging materials to medical devices, electronics and aerospace components, the ability of materials to either block or regulate vapour transmission can have a direct impact on their effectiveness, reliability and lifecycle.

Vapour transmission, even at very low levels, can cause issues such as adhesive failure, corrosion, fogging, electrical short-circuits, microbial growth and shelf-life reduction. As modern materials become more sophisticated, with multi-layer structures and specialist coatings, understanding and controlling vapour permeability becomes not just beneficial, but essential.

Versaperm Ltd, a UK-based specialist in permeability measurement, is helping industries address this challenge through an advanced Mass Spectrometry (MS) version of its vapour permeability testing system. This highly sensitive and versatile instrument is capable of measuring the permeability of virtually all non-proscribed gases and vapour mixtures, with a sensitivity reaching into the parts per million (PPM) and parts per billion (PPB) ranges. The system delivers highly repeatable and precise measurements under a wide range of conditions, including variable pressures, partial pressures and temperatures, extending even into supercritical regions.

Unlike traditional methods, Versaperm’s MS-based system can determine the individual vapour permeability of each element in a gaseous mixture with just one overall measurement. It is ideally suited for use with both flat materials and fully-formed three-dimensional components, including complex laminates, barrier structures, adhesives, seals, enclosures, films and finished roducts. The ability to generate detailed, application-specific data makes the system invaluable across a wide spectrum of industries where moisture or gas control is critical.

In addition to supplying world-class testing equipment, Versaperm offers an in-house laboratory testing service and technical consultancy. These services allow customers to evaluate samples, benchmark materials and investigate product failures without the need to invest in equipment themselves. This holistic approach supports research, development, quality assurance and regulatory compliance across a wide range of applications.

Versaperm’s instruments are used by manufacturers, universities and National Standards agencies around the world. With decades of technical experience, the company remains committed to advancing the science of permeability and helping organisations optimise their products for performance, protection and efficiency.
