Reduce Waste And Increase Shelf Life
Food and the permeabioity of edible and packaging barriers

A vast amount of food, costing over two billion pounds, is left to rot each year – but this food mountain could be dramatically reduced if the food was simply packaged properly.  Using an appropriate packaging material keeps food safe and edible for much longer, often increasing shelf life by between 300 & 800% for the most susceptible products.

The key lies in understanding and controlling the permeability of the packaging.  Some foods need to be allowed to respire, some must be prevented.  And the exact requirements for keeping them fresh are very different for individual food types.  Packaging that extends the shelf life of cakes makes cheese go off more quickly!

To overcome the problems Versaperm has developed new features and facilities for its tried and tested permeability system which make it ideal for food  - so the equipment can precisely measure the properties that cause or prevent rot.  Most important is a package’s permeability with respect to gases such as water vapour, Oxygen (O2), Nitrogen (N2) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

Versaperm’s system is typically accurate in the parts per million range and it can produce results in as little as thirty minutes for some products.  The system is highly automated and can optionally measure several different samples at the same time.   It can test both the packaging material and the finished package.

Versaperm also offers a comprehensive permeability laboratory testing service - usually with a 24 hour turn around.
