For time immemorial humans have been obsessed with eating delicious food. Surprisingly without the sense of smell, our taste is limited to just five sensations: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and savoury. All of the other flavours we experience come from smell. So, smell is even more important to taste than most people realise. It is critically important to prevent foods highly volatile aromas from either escaping or “going off”.
Measuring how quickly aromatics escape from food’s, cosmetics’ or household products’ packaging only moved from being a black art into a science a few years ago. This is due to the many technological advances in vapour permeability detection equipment. These have been combined and embodied into Versaperm’s MS Vapour Permeability equipment.
The system works on all packaging materials, including coatings, laminates, films, card and plastics as well as on complete and finished packages or containers. From modified atmosphere packaging through to pharmaceutical, cosmetic and traditional packaging, Versaperm’s new multi-chamber Mass Spectrometry system allows users to detect even the volatile top-note aromatic compounds with accuracies in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to PPB ranges. And that helps you to preserve aromas and tastes for longer, prolong shelf-life and preventing products developing “off” smells.
The Versaperm system can measure most gasses including oxygen, CO2, water vapour, and the plant hormone ethylene. And it can do this not just for material samples, but also for the complete finished and packaged product. It even allows you to measure the individual permeabilities for all individual components in an aroma, with just a single measurement.
This can be vital because manufacturing processes such as heating, thermoforming, folding, stretching etc. can increase or decrease a package’s vapour permeability by a factor of 400%. Where desired the equipment can also control temperature, pressure and other cyclical factors.
The multi-chamber system allows measurements to be produced on multiple samples at the same time and for different aromatics. Different designs and clamping systems cater for varying sample and product types.
As well as manufacturing the instruments, Versaperm offers a permeability testing service for companies that only need to test packaging or materials on an irregular basis.
