Vapour permeability issues cost the UK several billion pounds every year.  The problems are caused by vapours, usually water, getting into the wrong place and then condensing.  Not only is water vapour is a major concern in the use of vacuum equipment, particularly in high- and UHV regions, but even in normal conditions it is a common cause of computers and machines that fail or jam, fuel that leaks, food that goes "off" and medicines and biological materials that lose potency.  It has even caused missiles to crash.

Versaperm has been working on vapour permeability problems for over thirty years and, based on this and its manufacturing experience it has introduced a "Materials' Permeability Consultancy" that is designed to solve the numerous problems that are faced by manufacturers, processors, engineers, designers and quality control personnel,

Every material is permeable to gases and they often perform in an counter-intuitive way, for example silicone is good barrier against liquid water - but it is virtually useless where water vapour is concerned as it can pass through it almost as if it wasn't there.

The Versaperm consultancy also advises on materials testing and, where required, design and manufacture dedicated equipment to meet specific needs. The company operates across commercial, industrial and academic areas.

Lastly, the consultancy offers a quick turn-around vapour permeability measurement service where samples can often be tested within just 24 hours.
