Paper and its coatings represent a twenty $billion a year industry and two things are almost exclusively responsible for its success and failures. These are developing improved coatings and controlling the defects that can plague them. Both of these have been difficult to solve but have become very much easier and quicker thanks to some new technical developments at Versaperm.
Versaperm’s latest ultra-sensitive multi-gas instrument for papers and coatings provides a quick and very precise measurement of the critically important vapour permeability of both coatings under development and their defects, such as foam streaks, pinholes and pits. Accuracies are in the PPM (Parts Per Million) to PPB range.
The system can measure vapour permeability of coatings not just for water vapour but oxygen, CO2, hydrocarbons, the inert noble gasses and every single other gas or vapour that it is legal to use or measure1. By also detecting and measuring the detects caused during manufacture, the system is ideal to use for use in both development and quality control.
The physical characteristics of papers or card materials are primarily created by the coating’s vapour permeability. Versaperm systems are capable of testing this for up to six coatings, samples, components or products at a single time, sometimes in as little as 30 minutes. It takes just one single measurement to determine the individual vapour permeability for all of the gases under test.
Along with paper and coatings, the system can measure the permeability of films, laminates, foils plus sealed and finished cartons.
As well as manufacturing the instruments, Versaperm offers laboratory and consultancy services for companies that only require sample testing on an irregular basis.
