Permeability of foils and laminated

Water damage and the decay it causes is insidious. It causes rust, results in several billion pounds worth of food being thrown away every year. Some films, foils and coatings are very good at keeping out liquid water, but at the same time, provide almost no barrier to water in its vapour form.

Even when appropriate materials are used the results can be far from ideal, not only is sealing a far from perfect science, but the very act of manufacturing can reduce the ability to keep out water by a factor of four! (e.g. thermoforming). The only way to identify this in the real world is to measure it – and that's where Versaperm's latest range of permeability meters comes in.

A vast assortment of foils, films and coatings can be used to protect, make vapour-resistant and enhance anything from a building to sunglasses and from paper to steel or plastics.  A coating with the wrong permeability can cause products to under-perform or even fail.

Versaperm has now made measuring this essential property quicker, simpler and more accurate with respect not just to water vapour, but optionally hydrocarbons, CO2 or virtually any other common gas or vapour.

The meter is highly automated and can characterise several material samples or finished products at a time - and results are usually accurate to better than one part per million (with some samples accuracy can be measured in parts per billion (PPB).

As an added advantage it needs at most minimal training and can sometimes give results in as little as 30 minutes.  Conventionally gravimetric measurements may take several days to weeks and give significantly less reliable results.

A permeability testing service is also available from Versaperm - usually with a 24 hour turn around.
